Not Enough

I wish I were taller. I wish I had a smaller nose. I wish I didn't like chocolate so much.

You ever find yourself comparing yourself to a Victoria's Secret Model? Or maybe a famous Baseball player (definitely a Yankee not a Red Sox, why would you want to be that?). I threw in Baseball player to seem more relatable to everyone but what really inspired this post is the impending doom of the annual Victoria's Secret Fashion show coming up in a few days. If you're anything like me, you watch the show and immediately start dieting the next day.

My favorite thing is how all the models try to seem so relatable by saying "everyone's body is beautiful". Oh really Bella Hadid? You think I'm going to believe you? With your seven-foot-five height and your 13 inch waste?  With your *obvious* nose job and botox injections? I also love how they say "Ugh I love to eat". Yes Gigi Hadid, I get it, you down a cheeseburger on national T.V. once in a while to make everyone think you're just like the rest of us, but you aren't. Yes everyone is beautiful in their own way but I don't necessarily believe you super models who's job makes a lot of people feel like crap about themselves and who's living is made through extreme vanity.

Maybe I'm being bitter (duh), maybe I'm jealous (I am), maybe I'm right (always). But you (fictional supermodel who I am speaking too) are not the majority. Yes it isn't your fault that you were blessed with great genes, height, and an insanely fast metabolism, but the fact that you just got lucky in life is actually worse. Don't get me wrong, I understand a lot of them work hard for the way they look but the fact that they say it's just because of a healthy diet and exercise is just hypocritical.

I also bring this up because the other night my roommates and I sat around talking about all the things we would change about ourselves if we could (this is just one existential question we discuss, next week it's whether or not we want kids so stay tuned!) It made me realize that we are comparing ourselves to people who were/are genetically gifted with a lot of money.

I hate to be the person who says the show promotes unattainable images of what a body should look like but it's sort of true. It's great motivation but what's wrong with the way the majority of people look like? Why aren't there plus sized models? Why aren't there shorter models? If your clothes are for everyday people then why do you have a small minority modeling them? They're not called super models for nothing.

You should change the way you look if that's what you want, if that's what will give you confidence, or if it'll make you feel better about yourself. But don't do it because you think that's what a model looks like and that's what people think is beautiful.
