When Opinions Matter
To the girls we meet in a bathroom bars late at night who compliment our outfits, to the best friends and roommates who lend us our crucial pieces right before a night out, to the sisters who are conveniently the same size as us: this one’s for you.
Yes, the dress that fits in all the right places is essential to our wardrobe, but what would an outfit be if it were not for the friends there to help us pick it out? There is simply nothing better than getting ready for a night out with your closest confidants. An outfit is not an outfit if there is no one there to compliment you in it. Without the Serena to your Blair, the Caroline to your Elena, the Dionne to your Cher, life is simply less fun, no matter what you’re wearing.
Aside from the importance of having your friends “gas you up” right before a date or an outing, you always need a second opinion on an outfit. If my sister doesn’t think my outfit is 200% perfect, I will change the whole thing. Her opinion matters that much to me. My friends and I consult each other on hair lengths & colors, what to buy in the mall, and which shoes look best with an outfit. Asking someone their opinion and taking their advice is one of the highest forms of flattery. You might argue that, regardless of what your friends thinks, you will wear those red shoes and that shows more self confidence. However, your friends or sisters know you best and might encourage the blue shoes. They know you from a different point of view and they see you differently than you see yourself.
Sharing the little things with your friends or sisters makes your relationship even more special. If you are like me, you take your clothes and what you look like very seriously. However I have the habit of sometimes dressing inappropriately for certain occasions (you know when they say you can never be overdressed? Believe me, you can be). You need a friend there to walk you through those crazy, stressed out moments right before you’re about to leave for a date or a night out. Don’t get me wrong, fashion and clothes are more important than people think, but without someone there to have a laugh, solve a fashion crisis, or bond over shopping with, it doesn’t mean much.
